Todak Basar Stadium inaugurated

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: The Todak Basar Stadium at Basar was inaugurated by PWD Minister Gojen Gadi today.

The stadium with rostrum and three galleries with seating capacity of around 1500 was constructed by PW Department under the supervision of Superintendent Engineer, Basar Markar Bam.

Addressing the mammoth gathering at the inaugural function, Gadi appealed to the public of Basar to take proper care of the stadium and take full advantage of the facility by organizing various games and sports activities. He further committed to developing infrastructure on need base in future.

Recalling the development initiatives of former minster Late Todak Basar, he assured to follow his path for development of the area in particular and state as a whole.

Acknowledging the initiative of Gadi in constructing the stadium, Basar Zila Parisad Member Jonya Basar urged the minister to make it a well equipped stadium.

ZPM Tonyir Basar, and Anchal Samity Chairperson Yaham Bam also spoke on the occasion.

Various Head of the Department, public and panchayat leaders, students and public of Basar area attended the inaugural function.

ITBP to meet Doimukh FC in final

NAHARLAGUN, Aug 13: A performance that betrayed expectations by last year's finalist today saw BamangTaji FC bowing out of the fifth Eagle trophy after being beaten by defending champions ITBP 2-0 here at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium.

Having played out a listless first half where they suffered a setback when ITBP's GumliRiba scored in the 20th minute of the match, BTFC players looked out of sort at all areas of the field. Even with the Ramching brothers at the helm of affairs, the players were unable to find their rhythm and coordination. Although BTFC failed to make any headway in the first half, the defending champions too did not display the kind of powerful performance that has marked their campaign so far. It would take the half-time break to inject some juice and energy into the game.

When play resumed, both teams came to the field more determined. While BTFC players looked to level the game, ITBP players did their best to keep things at bay. The new energy also meant that the play sometimes got out of hand and mixed with passion, as some rough tackles began on the field. A careless arm across the face of BTFC's RoshanRamching earned Limis BC a yellow card and a few minutes later YukarTakar was cautioned by the referee.

Even though the players tried their best, it just was not going to be BTFC's day and their fate was sealed when SC Bhutia hit home a penalty awarded to ITBP in the 83rd minute.

The final will be played on August 15 between FC Doimukh and ITBP.

ASKA team leaves for Delhi to take part in Independence Cup Karate C’Ship

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: A strong 41-member contingent from Arunachal Shito-Ryu Karate Do Association (ASKA), including three officials, left here today for Delhi to take part in the two days 10th All India Independence Cup Karate Championship beginning at Talkatora Indoor Stadium August 16.

The team will take part in Senior Boys (+18 years) kata and kumite, Senior Girls (+18 years) kumite, Junior Boys (16-17 years) kumite, Cadet (14-15 years) Boys and Girls kumite and Sub-Junior Boys (U-14 years) kumite under various weight categories.

Prakash Limbu and Tagri Raju are the coaches for Girls and Boys teams respectively while Somgang Lowang is the Team Manager.

GBFC and BUFC enters semi final in the Itanagar Solung football tournament

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: GolgíBoté FC beat KiyiBogyi FC by 2-0 in the quarter final match of ItanagarSoloung Football Tournament being played at Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic College play ground today.

TajingBonung and ObangPanor scored one goal each for GolgíBoté.

In the second match between Banggo UFC andNuyiYameng FC, both the team failed to score any goal even in the penalty shot out, the scored remain draw.

Later, the Banggo united FC was declared winner of the match through a toss decision by the organizing committee.

DDJAC, GPF temporarily suspend agitation

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: The District Demand Joint Action Committee (DDJAC) and Galo Peoples’ Federation (GPF) have temporarily suspended their proposed agitation after Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Jomde Kena on behalf of the state government has reportedly assured to establish the temporary headquarters of Lower Siang at Likabali.

DDJAC and GPF in a joint press statement informed that they had suspended their proposed agitation for three months after Kena had requested them to withdraw their agitation with an assurance that the temporary headquarters of Lower Siang will be made functional at Likabali and a Press statement in this regard will be issued by him on behalf of the State Govt.

The decision was taken in a meeting at Likabali Community Hall yesterday which was attended by representatives from the entire blocks and segments of both constituencies of 28th Likabali and 36th Nari Koyu, the press statement said.

It was decided in the meeting that the Local Sub-ordinate Committee (LSC) would prevail upon the State Govt. and the local MLA for the declaration of Likabali as temporary headquarters of Lower Siang within three months failing which rigorous movement would be re-launched.

It was also decided in the meeting that the LSC would prevail upon the Parliamentary Secretary for rectification of the “3 months” instead of ‘few’ and clearly specify ‘Sikirima’ as the Permanent Headquarters of Lower Siang district in a Press Statement within 3 days, the press statement added.

DEO holds co-ordination meeting

BOMDILA, Aug 13: A co-ordination meeting of all the EROs, AEROs and DLMTs of the district was convened today at district headquarters Bomdila for the Special Summary Revision of Photo Electoral Roll.

Various pre-revision activities such as appointment of BLOs and AC level Master Trainers, rationalization of polling stations with basic minimum facilities, De-duplication campaigns, SVEEP and photography campaign for residual electors etc were discussed at length based on the power point presentation made by the ADC (Eln) P Sora.

Earlier, DC cum DEO AK Singh appreciating all the administrative officers / EROs & AEROs for their competence and sincere efforts in facilitating peaceful and successful simultaneous elections in the district, informed of the district proposed for national award.

He laid maximum stress on the performance of the BLOs to make the special summary revision works successful and called upon them to be pro-active.

Among others, DC Singh impressed on the timely and total completion of the NPR and the CMsUHIS in the district for which the administrative officers are to strictly monitor and supervise the performance of the service providers. He also briefed of the monthly reviews on Power projects and land acquisitions for Army and BRO in the district and directed the administrative officers to make themselves available for the meeting as and when asked for. Bhupen Hazarika National Award to noted journalist

PUNE, Aug 13: Noted journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap has been selected for the 3rd Bhupen Hazarika National Award instituted by Sarhad, a Pune-based organization that has been working in the field of national integration and conflict-resolution for the past several years.

Instituted in 2012 to honour a person from the Northeastern region who has rendered outstanding work at the national and international level in the name of Bhupen Hazarika, the award was conferred on noted film-maker Jahnu Barua in 2012 and renowned theatre personality Ratan Thiyam in 2013.

This year noted Guwahati-based journalist Samuda Gupta Kashyap has been selected for projecting the Northeastern Region through his three decades of journalism, of which nearly a quarter of a century through The Indian Express.

The award that consists of Rs 51,000 in cash, a memento and a citation, will be formally given away at Pune in October, Sanjay Nahar, founder and president of Sarhad said in a press release. The award also intends to strengthen the bond between Maharashtra and the Northeastern region.

Association condemns eviction drive

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: The All Lower Subansiri District Border Students’ Union strongly condemned the illegal eviction drives being allegedly carried out by the Assam forest officials at Dollungmukh area recently damaging paddy field. The lack of security along the Assam-Arunachal boundary is the main cause for such incidents, added the association. It further sought the government attention towards unlawful activities resorted by the Assam forest officials which create tension between to two states.

AVP starts computer training institute at Dapo

DAPORIJO, Aug 13: Arunachal Vikash Parishad (AVP), Upper Subansiri unit opened a computer training institute, at Gandhi Market here.

Named Talum Rukbo Computer Institute, the institute will impart basic computer education, especially to poor students.

Speaking at the inaugural function local MLA Dikto Yekar highlighted the importance of computer and computer education in today’s world. He also said that now a days every private schools are imparting computer education to students but unfortunately many of the poor children studying in government schools are not fortunate enough to learn computer education as the schools are proving the same facility.

He appreciated the AVP and many other NGOS for coming forward to give free computer education and tuition to children hailing from poor family. He appeal to the students to avail the opportunity.

Meanwhile, Viveka-nanda Kendra Arun Jyoti, Upper Subansiri district unit celebrated Raksha Bandan at many places in the district and tied Rakhis to more than 5000 people, including ITBP, CRPF, India Army jawans.

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: Reacting to the press statements made by All Arunachal Pradesh Seba Real Estate Marketing Executive Welfare Association recently claiming that Seba Real Estate has invested on Hotel River View, the hotel management today clarified that hotel has nothing to do with Seba Real Estate nor has any business with it. Expressing anguish over publication of such press statement without verifying the facts, it also claimed that “whatever the Company spent for the furnishing of the Hotel had been paid back to the Company as per the Company Board of Directors Resolution.”

8 accused in Vijaya Bank robbery arrested, one absconding

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: City Police have arrested eight accused involved in Rajiv Gandhi University campus Vijaya Bank robbery along with the weapons and vehicles used to carry out the looting.

The robbers made away with Rs 42,15,980 from Vijaya Bank at gun-point and shot cashier Joydeep Chatterjee on August two this month.

Superintendent of Police Seju P. Kuruvilla informed that the robbers were arrested after several raids were conducted in various places here and in neighboring Assam in the last 10 days.

The arrested accused are Hiba Tajuk (30), Hiba village, Sangram, Kurung Kumey, Bamang Jhon (21) Rowa village, Sangram, Kurung Kumey, Tame Tarh Tarang (30), Hiya village, Nyapin, Kurung Kumey, Hiba Tagi (23), Hiba village, Sangram, Kurung Kumey. Raj Darlami Mogor (22), Sunaipam village, Sonitpur, Assam, Bamang Taja (28), Pado village, Sangram, Kurung Kumey, Miss Kapu Sat (18), Kabak village, Raga, Lower Subansiri and Ngabi Tali (30), Siru Taley village, Kamba, West Siang.

One more accused wanted in the robbery case, namely Hiba Sikku (28), is still absconding and police has sought information from public which may lead to arrest of the person.

Of the Rs 42,15,980 looted, police claimed to have recovered Rs 8.30 lakh from the accused. One 0.32 mm and two .22 mm Pistols with live rounds were seized and two vehicles (Scorpio, Tata Sumo) and three motorcycles were recovered from the accused.

All the arrested accused persons have been remanded to police custody for interrogation and further investigation.

Govt considering setting up of 3 greenfield airports in NE

New Delhi, Aug 13: Government is considering setting up of three greenfield airports in the Northeast -- in Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland.

Minister of State for Development of Northeastern Region V K Singh told Lok Sabha three greenfield airports are considered or taken up in NE Region -- Pakyong (Sikkim), Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh) and Chiethu (Nagaland).

Singh said out of this three, Airports Authority of India has already taken up the construction of Pakyong airport and the work is in progress and its is expected to be completed in December 2016.

"The AAI had completed the Master Planning of Itanagar airport and is in process of preparing the Detailed Project Report. The approval of Steering Committee is in the process.

The Minister said there are 12 non-operational airports in the region out of which there is proposal to develop and operationalise eight airports -- Along, Daporizo, Pasighat, Tezu and Zero in Arunachal Pradesh, Tura in Meghalaya and Rupsi in Assam and Kailashahar in Tripura.

"With respect to Chiethu airport, Nagaland government has been requested to find out an alternate site which is more flat and suitable for capital city airport. The state government has identified an alternative site, the feasibility study is to be carried out," he said during Question Hour. PTI

Tuki calls for preservation of vast forest cover, mechanism to plug leakage of forest revenue

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: Chief Minister Nabam Tuki today emphasized on preservation and propagation of the vast forest cover that Arunachal Pradesh has been bestowed by nature. He was speaking in a programme at the Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic here on occasion of Vanamahotsava being observed all over the country.

While lauding the people and the department of Forest & Environment for maintaining one of the best forest-covers in the country – about 82 per cent - the Chief Minister said that it was not enough and ought to be increased.

“Why remain content on the 82 per cent forest cover? Can’t we increase it to 90 per cent?” he questioned and called upon the youths to take the lead in this endeavour. He urged the youths to take a pledge to plant at least one sapling each month.

“We cannot go beyond being number one (in forest cover). But we have to be number one and remain as number one!” he said.

Appreciating the officers and officials of the department of Forests & Environment for preserving the forest cover, Tuki however maintained that lot is still to be done in the field of management of forest resources.

He pointed that despite the ban on timber business by the Supreme Court since 1996, the State still can improve its economy to a large extent through judicious use of its natural resources. He expressed concern over the loopholes in management of resources while calling for a mechanism to completely plug leakage of revenue from forest produces.

“Our wealth is being drained out and we need to stop it through proper management,” the Chief Minister said.

Giving the example of Malaysia, which in spite of being a smaller country than India is one of the best countries in the world in management of its forest resources, Tuki questioned why Arunachal Pradesh can’t replicate the success.

“Come to think of it, all technical know-hows and management experts in Malaysia are from India!” he observed.

Another concern the Chief Minister called for attention was the encroachment of reserve forests and sanctuaries by people. As it was natural for local people to settle unknowingly in such reserved forests, he suggested creating awareness by incorporating subjects on forest conservation in school syllabus right from the primary level.

Former Chief Minister of Goa and AICC General Secretary, in-Charge Northeastern States, Luizinho Faleiro also accompanied the Chief Minister to the programme.

In his brief address to students and staff of the Polytechnic, Faleiro compared Goa with Arunachal Pradesh and admitted that the later was more scenic and beautiful.

He praised the people of the state for preserving the rich greenery and encouraged them to maintain it for generations to come.

“You don’t know what you are giving to the world. With your forests preserved you are helping the world to live a healthy life!” he said.

The programme was also attended by APCC President Padi Richo, Itanagar Municipal Councilor Taba Yall Nabam, PCCF Omkar Singh, Capital Deputy Commissioner Mige Kamki, several Forest officials, teachers and students of the Polytechnic.

Earlier, Tuki, Faleiro, Richo, Yall and others planted tree saplings in the premises of the institute to mark the occasion.

MoU signed for Oil Palm cultivation

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: State Agriculture Department today signed two MoUs with Ruchi Soya Industries and 3F Oil Palm Agrotech Ltd, Hyderabad respectively for Oil Palm cultivation covering an area of 5000 ha each in East Siang and Lower Dibang Valley districts. Hage Khoda, Commissioner, Agriculture signed the MoUs on behalf of the State Govt.

Earlier, MoU for development of 5000 ha area in Lohit, Changlang and Tirap district was signed with Sivsais Oil Palm Ltd and nursery for Oil Palm seedlings has already started at Jairampur.

In order to reduce India’s dependence on import of edible oil (Oil Palm) from countries like Malaysia and Indonesia to a tune of approx. Rs. 65,000 crores annually, Ministry of Agriculture, GoI, has accorded top priority for area expansion under Oil Palm cultivation by launch of National Mission on Oilseeds & Oil Palm (NMOOP) and accorded priority for Oil Palm area expansion in North East considering its agro-climatic suitability.

As per assessment, Arunachal Pradesh has more than 1 lakh ha suitable area for Oil palm cultivation.

Sufficient denuded forest areas in the foothills of the state can be brought under perennial oil palm plantation for raising farmers’ income besides, rural livelihood support, employment generation and upliftment of the state’s economy. The MoU has incorporated buy back guarantee of Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB) produced by the farmers in plantation zones and is based on contract farming model. On an average, a farmer is expected to earn Rs. 80,000 to 90,000 per hectare annually by selling FFBs.

The private Oil Palm Developers and processors are implementing similar projects in Mizoram and many other states of the country, they are of the opinion that the communication and other logistics in Arunachal Pradesh are comparatively much better here besides added advantage of high rainfall which will reduce the cost of cultivation in terms of irrigation and they are optimistic that the state shall surge as a major Oil Palm producer in the country in next 5-6 years.

Taloh visits Koreng, spells out development initiatives

PANGIN, Aug 13: Education, Library, Textile and Handloom Minister Tapang Taloh has visited Koreng village, few kilometer away from Pangin today.

While addressing a public meeting organized by the Koreng villagers, the Minister hoped that with sincere cooperation of the people, he will able to perform his responsibility for all round development of the area.

“Through stable, transparent, accountable and people-oriented governance, the fiscal health of the State has improved substantially registering an unprecedented growth in all spheres under the leadership of the present CM Nabam Tuki,” Taloh said.

He further informed that due to his initiation and productive efforts a big industry of ‘Flora & Fragrance’ is being setup at Niglog Industrial Growth Center for which fifty crores has already been granted by the Union Government and tea cultivation has set new height of development in the state. Such development would generate huge employment and enhance living standard in coming days, the minister believes.

While talking on education sector, the Education Minister said his department as a whole achieved remarkable progresses so far. “But after thorough investigation and evaluations he found there were several functional problems that impact the quality of education, resulted in lowered motivation for educational attainment in the state. By receiving true education one can lead a happy and glorious life in the world but one of the strongest contributing factors to development is citizens’ access to quality education. While it is evident that Arunachal has increased the quantity of enrolled students, it is not necessarily the case that the quality of education matches the quantity. This not only questions the students’ learning experience but whether the education adequately prepares them as citizens for the further advancement of the state in particular and the nation as a whole,” the minister opined. “I would leave no stone unturned for massive developments in the sector,” the minister added.

Emphasizing on quality of education, he said ‘Single Window Transfer-Posting’ would mitigate teachers’ shortage and ensure adequate teaching strength in all schools in the state. All centrally sponsored schemes such as SSA-RTE, RMSA, RUSA etc would be put to its optimum, he assured. The state’s first women college has been setup and engineering college is being established soon in the state due to his tireless efforts, Taloh informed.

The minister advised the people to maintain peace and tranquility and to spread the message of brotherhood in the society for developments and better tomorrow. He appreciated the ADC Boleng Nyiken Lollen and EAC Pangin T Jonom in particular for effective control of law and order which is prerequisite for all round development. Joy Prashant, NyatoMosi wins 5th Donli Riba Gaming Quest

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: The fifth edition of the DonliRiba Gaming Quest, featuring challenges in the video games FIFA 14 and Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 14, concluded here today with an awards ceremony with a difference. In addition to the laurels won by the players, the gaming tournament also recognized and felicitated its youngest participant 8-year old EdingPertin for his sportsmanship spirit. Though he played hard and yet did not win the tournament, it was Eding who handed over the trophies to the winners.

With over 160 participants vying for the top honours, it was finally Joy Prashant who walked away with the golden remote trophy and the cash award of ` Rs30000 in the PES 14 tournament. In the FIFA 14 matches, NyatoMosi emerged champion with the golden remote trophy and a cash award of Rs`10000. TokoTakar won the silver trophy and Rs10000 as Runner-Up in PES 14, for the second consecutive year. The Runner-Up in FIFA 14 Tilling Tabing received a special cash prize.

This was a special year for Joy Prashant who has been participating in the tournament since its 3rd Edition where he lost out in the qualifying rounds. Last year, at the 4th edition he was the Runner Up and today he topped it up with the championship.

The other notable winner was Bomi Lego, who won both the Golden Boot award of Rs` 2000 for the highest number of goals scored in the tournament as well as the Magic Boot of Rs1000 for the maximum goals in a single match.

The 5-year old tournament evoked a mixed bag of emotions and responses from the participants. While there were the committed players who have been participating since the first edition in 2010, there were also a new lot of younger players who have taken to gaming and who came to the event with big dreams. With cash stakes beating tournaments across the country, DRGQ has indeed earned its mettle as the premiere gaming tournament in the State.

This year, the highlight of the tournament was the extensive outreach on tobacco abuse for participants and their family and friends who came along. With a special focus on use of gutkha and its role as a cause agent of oral cancer, players could be seen recoiling from looking at the graphic images that the organizers used in presentations and the visual publicity material, in an apparent 'shock and scare' approach to anti-tobacco awareness.

Adding a soft end to the tournament, Eding was seen taking pictures of these larger-than-life posters, which he said he would share with friends and seniors in school.

Jairampur police geared with traffic devices

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Laisam Simai contributed few road safety and traffic control devices to Jairampur Police in a brief and simple function at Jairampur Police Station today.

While handing over the items to Jairampur Police, the MLA opined that modern devices and new gadgets are very essential to control growing traffic as well to avoid road mishaps. He hoped the traffic devises, although small in quantity, will be of great help to police.

He also assured to provide more similar items in future.

Later, the MLA distributed school furniture to Govt. Primary school Jairampur.

On the occasion, the police officers advised drivers to obey the rules on roads for their own safety and maintain discipline while parking vehicles in designated parking lots. “It will not only ease traffic movement but also enhance the beauty of township and narrate the sense of civic responsibility to passerby”, said the officer in charge of the Police Station Tomai Wangpan.

Jairampur ADC Kento Riba said that it is not only the police who are responsible for control of traffic but it is also the duty and responsibility of all road users, including the pedestrians, motorists/drivers to obey traffic rules for each other’s safety.

Tani Foundation organizes tree plantation

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: Tani Foundation, a charitable society based in Itanagar today organized tree plantation around the premises of Govt. Secondary School, Chimpu led by its President Likha Tejji and General Secretary Dr. Logo Bage along with executive members. The tree plantation progamme were participated by students, teachers and T. Koyu, Headmaster of the school. The society also donated 10 numbers of blackboards and 5 numbers of water filters for benefit of students and teachers.

Poma villagers determined to curb criminal activities

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: The villagers of Poma under Sangdupota circle of Papum Pare district have taken many important decisions to check the crime in the area. A meeting was held recently at Poma village chaired by Techi Ana, ASM, Poma Panchayat which was attended by Panchayat leaders and ordinary villagers. Major decisions were taken to ensure safety and security of the area. To support the developmental projects and curb down criminal activities, the villagers decided that strong action will be taken against those public or Panchayat leaders who unnecessarily assaults or harasses government employees of area.

If any persons indulge in theft or robbery within the jurisdiction of Poma Panchayat, the villagers will judge the case and accordingly award punishment as per gravity of offence after following proper procedure through local Mel body.

While taking serious exception to outsiders creating nuisance in village area, the villagers have banned hunting, fishing and picnicking in Poma Panchayat area. Persons indulging in illegal hunting and fishing will be fined Rs 30 thousand, while illegal picnickers will be fined Rs 20 thousand. Any outsider refusing to pay fine will be handed over to police or magistrate and modern as well as traditional legal action will be initiated against such criminals.

While allowing selling of land to outsiders within the periphery of village, the meeting resolved that Panchayat leaders will have final power to authorize selling of land after making proper inquiry about prospective buyers. Gaon burahs will notify the boundary of land and if buyer-seller does not follow the rules framed, the Panchayat member will not sign in land document making them invalid.

To save the forest cover, villagers have decided to hand over those persons who cause forest fire due to excessive jhum cultivation to the forest department for punishment as per prevailing law.

District Health Society review meeting held

ZIRO, Aug 13: The governing body cum review meeting of Lower Subansiri District Health Society was held at the conference hall of District Hospital, Ziro here today.

Chairing the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Krishna Mohan Uppu, who is also the Chairman of District Health Society, suggested for regular conduction of review meeting so as to identify shortcomings and problems in providing health services to people and make future plan.

Considering health department as one of the most important departments that deal with human lives, he appealed to the medical officers and para-medical staff to be punctual in their duty for providing effective services to the patients.

There should be ‘zero tolerance’ for absentee staff and stern action would be initiated against those found absent from duty without prior approval from the competent authority, he said.

The Programme officers have presented their performance reports on their respective subject with help of powerPoint. Dr. Joram Khopey (pathologist) presented on blood bank while Dr. Hage Nibo (DTO) on RNTCP and Dr. Kuru Tama (SMO) on ICTC.

Dr. Derim Liker, DFWO highlighted physical achievement for the year 2013-14 and showed the statement related to financial position through PowerPoint.

Earlier, DMO cum Chief Executive Officer (GB) of district health society Dr. Moli Riba briefed the aim and objectives of the review meeting.

The meeting was attended by all the medical officers of the district hospital Ziro and CHCs and PHCs and para medical staff of Lower Subansiri district.

Librarians’ Day celebrated in various districts of Arunachal

ITANAGAR, Aug 13: Librarians Day was celebrated at Namsai in a befitting manner commemorating the 123rd birthday of Dr. SR Ranganathan, doyen of Library Science in India.

Addressing at the function, Agriculture, Horticulture, Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister Chowna Mein advised all, especially the students to develop reading habits and make good use of the books in the library as books are our friend and today’s readers are tomorrow’s leaders.

He highlighted the various developmental activities being taken up by the Public Library Department in recent days. He applauded J. Borang, Director of Public Libraries for his keen interest in spreading library services throughout the state. He also appreciated Namsai ADC Ravi Jha and S. Mukherjee for taking initiative towards computerization of Namsai Library.

MLA Chow Zingnu Namchoom highlighted his involvement with Namsai Library since his childhood. He suggested the students to utilize the most essential library services available at Namsai.

Namsai Deputy Commissioner RK Sharma gave a vivid picture on the history of libraries in the state. He motivated the student community to use the library as a part of their life.

Namsai ADC Jha appreciated the department for organizing such type of programme for the benefit of the students. He announced for free membership for all the 220 students, who participated in the program as consented by the Director of Public Libraries. He advised the students to focus on reading ‘real books’ rather than ‘Facebook’ which seems to be the most common medium used by the young generation today.

Satyanarayan, M, Coordinator, APNE, Library, Wakro was felicitated by Mein for his contribution towards spreading of library movement in the interior pockets of the State.

Extempore speech, story telling, song and drama presented by the students enthralled the audience. Prizes and certificates to the winners and participants were distributed by Mein the MLA, the Deputy Commissioner and Addl. Deputy Commissioner.

Lekang EAC HN Dubey, Mahadevpur JNV Principal RR Singh, Librarian of GHSS, Namsai S. Bhatt, Teacher of Sec School Namsai T. Mungyak were the resource persons.

Around 350 persons including 220 Students from various schools, colleges and universities participated in the programme.

Earlier, the programme started with welcoming guest, paying homage to Dr Ranganathan by garlanding and floral tributes by Mein.

AALO: The National Library Day was observed at District Library Office, Aalo yesterday.

Attending the occasion DDSE Tomi Doke said that the dwindling reading habits among the young generation is a cause of concern for us and exhorted the students to enroll themselves as member of the District Library to select treasure troves of books of their choice like anecdotes, stories, poems etc that can hold the young minds for hours together to develop their reading habit in their formative years and asked the teachers to motivate all students to go to the library.

District Library& Information Officer Y Kena said that the day is celebrated to commemorate the great soul of the library science.

DIPRO Gijum Tali, Medical Officer Dr. Tsering Wangmo, ADEO (Academic) Radek Romin, ATA, District President Duda Sora and others gave detail deliberations on the importance of inculcating the reading habit.

On the occasion Ashok Kumar J/T, Doyir Rime a housewife, Duda Sora, teacher and Tomem Tali were given away awards for Best Reader, Best Reader among women, Best Library Activist, Best Library Staff respectively. A drawing competition held on the occasion was participated by 58 students from various schools of the town.

At Roing also the District Library of Lower Dibang Valley district observed the Librarian Day at District Library here yesterday. On the occasion, various literary activities like essay writing, drawing and painting competition was conducted among the students of various schools.

DDSE Mijom Lego while attending the function exhorted the students to use library to broaden their knowledge for achieving excellence in academic performance. He further urged the department to conduct such type of function in the district from time to time to encourage the students to come to library and read. He also requested the district librarians to conduct awareness campaign, seminars etc to inculcate reading and writing habits among the students. Later he gave away the prizes of various literary competitions to the students.

District Library & Information Officer, O Lego while highlighting the motto of the celebration of Librarian Day informed that the day is being celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr S R Ranganathan, Father of Library and Information Science. He urged the student community, govt. employees and the public to use the Library at its optimum level for gathering knowledge and information.

Rajesh Baruah: A Good Samaritan

Extremely exhausted after the hectic electioneering of the twin Assembly and Parliamentary elections in Aunachal Pradesh, I wanted to go out of Khonsa to have the much needed rest and relaxation somewhere outside, away from the madding crowd and life’s humdrum to rejuvenate myself physically and mentally. But all my vehicles required immediate repair as they were used during the elections. However, since Bohag Bihu was going on in Assam, all the garages were closed. To my great joy, one of my old acquaintances informed me that the garages in Dibrugarh would reopen by 17th April. So, I along with my son Diawang and my daughter in-law Nithong started for Dibrugarh and parked our car at Borah Hyundai servicing centre. But on that day no mechanics were present. The next day, the mechanics arrived and inspected the car and almost all the major parts were repaired by evening. A mechanic, one Mohan requested me to spare one more day for him so that he could get the car fully repaired but I refused. We wanted to head back to Khonsa at the earliest, not willing to stay one more day at Dibrugarh. So, I got the car released from the garage to go home thinking that the small mechanical snags could be fixed on some other convenient days. But in the hind side, I feel that the decision I made at that time happened to be the greatest blunder. The minor problems that I thought eventually proved to be the major and the most serious ones which I will unwillingly remember for a long time. However, the decision I took unconsciously is still shrouded in mystery, considering the unexpected episode that surfaced later during our night journey. Sometimes I feel the decision I made in that point of time was a ‘blessing in disguise.’

As we moved out from Dibrugarh, the troublesome car started showing signs of trouble and the engine stopped working suddenly. I straight away communicated the matter to the mechanic who had attended it and sought his advice. He told me to head back to Dibrugarh. It was 7.30 pm already. Unable to decide, I tried to start the engine again and to my pleasant surprise the car started. After informing the mechanic, we started for Khonsa. Disgustingly, the engine stopped again after reaching Naharkatia, 70 KM from my destination Khonsa. It was already 9.30 pm. With a sense of hopelessness, I tried to look for some mechanics at Naharkatia and by sheer luck, I saw one known mechanic walking by the road. When I told him about the problem, he happily told me to take the car to his garage which was located at a stone’s throw away. He along with his other mechanics tried his best but failed to detect the fault. He told me to leave the car at his garage. It was 10.30 pm. I was not at all prepared to stay back at Naharkatia. So, again we started our onward journey towards Khonsa with lots of apprehensions because the troublesome car could land us in trouble any moment. But I was determined and told my son and his wife not to worry, though I myself was overtly worried. But as feared, the car stopped again after moving for about 5 KM. I immediately called up a known mechanic at Naharkatia and he arrived at the spot. In spite of his best effort, the car did not start. He repeatedly told us to drop the idea of going to Khonsa and requested us to stay back at Naharkatia. But I was determined to go home. I still cannot figure out what made me so adamant that fateful night. So, we started from Naharkatia again with prayers in our lips. We somehow crossed the last Assam Township Jaipore and reached the most dreaded place often frequented by wild elephants and anti-social elements. The car began to show signs of trouble and I could anticipate that the worst situation was in store for us. To our great chagrin and utter dismay, the engine of the car stopped at the precise spot we were apprehensive of. It was midnight. By that time I gave up my hope of even thinking about reaching Khonsa. We were hoping against hope to see any vehicle appearing from any direction as we wanted to get out of the dangerous place. I was looking around if there were elephants nearby. Seeing my worried face, my son Diawang told me that they should be rather wary of thugs, anti-social elements instead of fear for elephants. But I was willing to meet any human beings irrespective of who they were for atleast I could communicate to them. Can we communicate to an aggressive wild elephants? My daughter in-law’s presence in such a hostile environ worried me more because she had never experienced such an ordeal in her life. However, I am optimistic by nature and I never lose heart even in the face of the worst situation.

Without much hope but with a little prayer, I tried to start the car and to our great joy, the problematic car started and without wasting a second I turned the car towards Naharkatia in Assam. I drove it as fast as I could. As we got closer and closer towards Naharkatia, my heart beat became louder and louder out of happiness. Just as we were crossing Jaipore, a vehicle was following us with equal speed. We were apprehensive again thinking that the vehicle must be following us with an ill-intention at that unearthly hour of the night. But we were ready to face any eventuality. To our great disappointment again, the car suddenly stopped right in the middle of the road. The vehicle which was following us at break neck speed overtook us and stopped right in front of us.

Before I could think of anything, a well dressed gentleman got down from the vehicle gracefully. He looked very inquisitive of the problem we were facing. He straight away came to me and asked, “What is the problem Sir? And how can I help you?” I politely told him about the problem we were facing. He then introduced to me saying that he was Mr Rajesh Baruah of Naharkatia but he was popularly known as Mintu Baruah. He comforted me by saying that we would not worry at all; all our problems would be solved. I took his humble words as eternal words of God and I really got comforted. He again asked me whether we trusted him or not to which I readily replied him that we did. Subsequently, he decided to take us to his house and he walked back to his vehicle and took out a piece of rope to pull my car. But interestingly, my car started again so the idea of pulling it was dropped. I told Mr Baruah to go ahead of us so that we could follow him and thus we reached his house without much difficulty.

Little away from the main Naharkatia Township, Mr Baruah’s house is situated amidst opulent Nature surrounded by a beautiful tea garden. His house keeper, a young Nepali boy, welcome us at the entrance of his house gracefully opening the Iron Gate for us to enter. As we entered his compound, we were truly comfortable. I could see one double storied RCC building and an Assam-Type quarter. Mr Baruah told me that the Assam-Type building was constructed by his late father while the RCC building was built by him. Soon we were taken inside the RCC building and accommodated in a well-furnished room. After freshening ourselves we were served tea and Bihu snacks of different varieties. The beloved wife of Mr Rajesh Baruah Smti Aparna Baruah expressed her desire to prepare food for us but we humbly requested not to take the trouble as it was too late. Then Mr Rajesh Baruah introduced us to all his family members including his two little children daughter Kamleshwari, 12 years and son Kausik, 9 years. They both came close to me and in a typical Assamese style with folded hands wished me, “Namaskar uncle.” Their innocence and well-cultured gesture is deeply engrained in my mind to this day. Unfortunately some of his family members who are in high government jobs were absent and so we could not meet them. As a human being I felt little guilty of disturbing the family members of Mr Baruah late at night because they woke up from their deep slumber to welcome us. However, everything went on smoothly and we had a good sleep.

We got up at 6 am in the morning and everything was fresh and fine. After having bath we joined Mr Baruah in his daily prayer with an incense stick each in our hands. After that we had a sumptuous breakfast. During the breakfast Mr Baruah told me that he was the youngest of the three brothers. He told me that his immediate elder brother Mr Biraj Baruah was looking after the Steel fabrication unit at Naharkatia and his sister Rekhamoni Baruah was running a cosmetic shop in Naharkatia market. After breakfast our memorable stay at Mr Baruah’s house was over and we were to proceed to Duliajan to repair the car that had given us so much trouble. It took us the whole day for the car to be repaired. By evening the car was at last released and we left for Khonsa. On the way to Khonsa Mr Rajesh Baruah was waiting for us at Jaipore in his business office and hosted a great dinner in our honour. After thanking Mr Baruah, we left Jaipore for Khonsa at 10.30 pm and reached Khonsa at 12.30 am. After reaching Khonsa, Mr Baruah’s phone call came asking about our safe journey. I thanked him for everything.

Mr Rajesh Baruah is an educated, well-cultured socialist, God-fearing, caring father and a flourishing business man of Naharkatia in Assam. He is Monotheistic in his religious concept and denounces caste distinction and promotes brotherhood among all sections of people. He believes in universal religion of truth and love. According to Mr Baruah, the root of all religions is the same and it flowers them to different forms with the same beauty of truth and love. Following this concept religiously, he is contented in life and has many admirers. I have become one of his admirers. His attitude towards any religion of the world is rational and realistic because of which he has earned respect from others. I must admit that my bitter journey from Dibrugarh has culminated in a truly enriching, fruitful and gainful end after meeting Mr Rajesh Baruah. During my brief interaction with Mr Baruah, I was not merely mesmerized by his amiable personality but I could also learn about the inexplicable philosophy of life which has changed my attitude towards other people and the society at large. Before meeting him I thought that everybody was selfish and self-centred in this world with no fellow-feelings. I remember the words of Abraham Lincoln in his letter to his son’s teacher;

“For every scoundrel there is a hero.”

For every selfish politician there is a dedicated leader.”

And for every enemy there is a friend.”

In this present world of ours, we feel unsafe everywhere and do not trust each other. Corruption at all places has made us suspicious of every one we meet. We look at everyone to be a cheat or a thug who is ready to harm us. We can speak well, write well but not do well. There is so much of chaos today. My memorable journey from Dibrugarh to Khonsa has taught me that there are still safe places in the world and trust-worthy people thanks to presence of people like Mr Rajesh Baruah. Let us be humble, affable and grounded to make this world a much beautiful place to live in. At a time when we always see the person standing next to us with suspicion, there are still good SAMARITANS like Mr Rajesh Baruah in our midst. People like Mr Baruah build bridges between people and spread love and harmony. We must shake off our smallness. Whenever some unfortunate incidents take place in Arunachal Pradesh, some organizations in Assam call Assam bandh causing untold sufferings to all the commuters. We need more people like Mr Rajesh Baruah who believes in true humanism and not in jingoism and rhetoric. I salute Mr Rajesh Baruah and pray to the Creator to bless him and his loving family abundantly.

Let us make Arunachal free from marijuana

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily, I would like to grab the attention of public authorities that there is increase in marijuana consumption in Itanagar. It can be found easily.

One of my friends who smoked marijuana point out that it is worse than alcohol.

Excusing one bad behaviour with another bad behaviour is silly.

I saw many negative impacts in some of my friends and would like to share some of my knowledge among the youth about this heinous addiction.

According to studies published in the Indian Medical Journal marijuana is more effective than cigarette. Medical marijuana is one thing, but the proliferation of marijuana used for recreation is very problematical, as can be seen in the following effects on students:

Users to get lower grades and become less likely to graduate, compared to students who do not smoke.

Significantly impairs skills related to attention, memory and learning even after not smoking for 24 hours.

Cause problems in sustaining and shifting attention.

Effects the ability to register, organize and use information, even compared to occasional users of marijuana.

Impairs users’ ability to recall words from a list even a week after quitting marijuana use.

Effects work performance: people who smoke marijuana are more likely to experience increased absences, tardiness, accidents.

People who test positive for marijuana use have 55 percent more accidents, 85 percent more injuries and a 75-percent increase in absenteeism compared to non-smokers. Heavy marijuana abusers self-report that their use of the drug had negative effects on their cognitive abilities, career status, social life and physical and mental health. So for all practical purposes, regardless of how good or bad it may be, it is not beneficial to society.

I request the concerned authorities to initiate steps towards to free the youth from this dangerous evil.

Let us make Arunachal, a land free from this evil. Let’s work together.

Working without salary

Dear Editor,

The time has come to inform the state govt that the salary of all NHM (National Health Mission) staffs is not being paid since last 4 and ½ months. Despite not getting salary the staffs consistently deliver the health services in the hard to reach areas of Anjaw, Upper Dibang Valley, Kurung kumey, Upper Siang, East Kameng and Upper Subansiri districts of the State.

Only the employees know how they manage to survive in those areas without having any money.

Meanwhile, even in the HQ people come to the house regularly for clearance of their pending bills. Many doors of lenders have been shutdown and now we have no alternate.

Inspite of giving assurance for early release of salary, the authority only directed the staffs to perform well. Good performance cannot be attained without strength in the body.

Hence, I would like to request the Minister of Health & Family Welfare in particular and State Govt. in general to kindly look into the matter and realize how the NHM staffs are surviving in very far flung and inaccessible area of the state without single penny in the pocket since last 4 and ½ months.

Lack of Career counselling

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily I would like to point out some of the flaws of the education system in our state.

Having studied the past two years of the secondary education in Kodaikanal (Tamil Nadu) I have been exposed to various educational opportunities like co-curriculum activities and number of carer guidance classes conducted by the school. The education system outside Arunachal is very advanced and not to forget the various kinds of educational opportunities that the students are exposed to.

On having returned to the state, I am really happy to see the good results by the students of X & XII boards. But the ignorance of such important thing like career guidance to the students, which shows the narrow mindedness of the education system in the state surprises and pains me a lot. Students are being led like a herd of sheep towards the destination called the Doctors, the engineers and the lawyers. The student’s ability & their true talent are not respected in any way.

We often tend to forget that our Arunachal Pradesh is a cultural and biodiversity hotspot. So, what our society actually need are Archaeologists, Botanists, Reporters, Designers, Artists, Entrepreneurs, Athletes, Directors and many more. With the mega dam project building up in the state we will need each and every young soul to be a budding inspiration to the society. That way we can show not just China or US, but the whole world that we too are the citizens of the world.

Rajya Sabha, cricket and Bollywood

This is in response to Poonam I Kaushish’s article titled “Trophy Rajya Sabha MPs Sachin’s bat, Rekha’s Mujra= zero”(August 12).

Despite aggregating merely 428 runs at an average of 22.52 in the last 20 Test innings prior to his announcement of retirement, no one questioned the consistent failure of the “God” as the valuable place in the national squad was meant for “personal enjoyment” of the overhyped superstar! Since the mere presence of the “God” in the squad, notwithstanding his disastrous performance in the last two and half years of his career, was enough for his blind devotees throughout the country and media to rejoice over; it got proved that Sachin’s personal statistical and commercial interest were accorded greater importance than that of the team, country and the game as a whole.

To respect this laggard Indian culture of transforming a mere mortal to a deity or “holy cow” whose shortcomings should never be viewed at any cost, questions regarding consistent absence of Sachin Tendulkar from Rajya Sabha should also be treated as absolute blasphemy.

As far as absence of Rekha is concerned, again we should try to view it in a lenient way. After all she is an honourable member of esteemed Bollywood! We should remain proud of that film industry which has successfully glamorised violence, eve teasing, vulgar display of female bodies, uttering cuss words and contributing immensely to the rising sexual crimes throughout the country. The whole nation had cried when a certain Bollywood hero was sent to jail for a “pardonable” and “minor” offence of hobnobbing with terrorists and possessing illegal arms! Another “innocent” star, who trampled an innocent pavement dweller under the wheels of his car which was being driven in an intoxicated state, is the cynosure of our eyes! In this liberal national culture of treating Bollywood personalities as residing above all norms of law and justice; can we afford to raise a hue and cry revolving mere absence of Rekha from Rajya Sabha?

Increase the number of ATMs

Dear Editor,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned

authorities regarding the problems related to ATM at Ziro, Lower Subansiri.

We have serious problem here because there is only one ATM at whole of Ziro town. One has to be in the line for about 4-5 hours to withdraw money from the ATM. Students coming from other places have to get the money sent by their parents from ATM but to withdraw money, they have to leave the school to be in queue and similarly, people of Ziro also have to leave their works in order to withdraw money from the single ATM. And most of the time, when we finally reach the ATM, there is no money left to withdraw cash.

As population is growing, we need more ATMs at Ziro town for betterment of the township and students.

Action of Modi govt. is questionable

Ruling BJP and opposition Congress on Wednesday clashed in Lok Sabha over communal riots in the country with both parties accusing each other of pursuing a divisive agenda and questioning secular credentials. Initiating the discussion on 'need for more effective mechanisms to deal with communal violence', leader of Congress Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that over 600 riots had taken place in various parts of the country in the two months since the Narendra Modi government came to power.

Amid strong protests by ruling benches, he suggested that BJP and its affiliates were trying to "divide the society" to retain power and warned that if it was not controlled, "we will repent". Naming VHP and Bajrang Dal and referring to certain comments made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Kharge said the "communal forces" had got emboldened after BJP came to power as they feel that they have "political power" now and would be protected.

Hitting back at Congress, BJP leader Yogi Adityanath charged Congress of implementing communal agenda. It is unfortunate that instead of addressing the concern, the two parties are indulging in blame game. Modi govt. should accept the fact that communal violence has manifold in the last two months. If they fail to take strong action to curb such violence, everyone will question their motive. PM Modi and his cabinet colleague should also come out publicly and condemn communal violence.
